View of Gamcheon Culture Village from the rooftop terrace of House with a View, one of the many pleasant cafes that have popped up in the neighborhood.
Long one of Busan’s poorer neighborhoods, Gamcheon Culture Village has undergone a tourism boom since the launch of an ambitious community beautification effort in 2009. Many of the homes have now been turned into cafes, galleries and shops, which is certainly good for the local economy, but the commercialization/gentrification might be a cause for concern.
That said, this is still one of my favorite places in Korea. It’s a neighborhood best enjoyed by getting lost in the endless maze of alleyways - you’ll discover something new at every turn.
